Taylor Swift in Vanity Fair

I am a huge fan of Vanity Fair. The writing and visuals are some of the best in the industry. However this month's trite fashion ads, ho hum editorial photos and Swift editorial were underwhelming.

Taylor's rush to move from sweet innocence to grown bad girl is both premature and unnecessary. Her look of unspoiled youth is more valuable and rare in the music industry than creating another BrittneyRhiannaChristina.

Right?

The Relationship

During my interview for an article on beauty lighting in next month’s issue of Popular Photography, the editor asked me for tips on positioning and equipment. I gave him an array of suggestions but the most important thing I told him was the relationship between the subject and I. Before becoming a photographer I was in sales for over a decade. My managers constantly discussed, had me read and made me attend seminars on body language, building trust and maintaining relationships. I bring this knowledge into my photography on my never-ending search for subject sincerity. The moment in the shoot where the person being photographed looks at me and silently asks to be understood. Then humbled by this trust, I do everything in my power to capture this expression of beauty and compassion forever.

Lauren Monday Video

I first met Lauren when I booked her for a hair shoot. As she was leaving she asked me if I could help her create additional photos for her portfolio. Here is video and stills of what we came up with over the course of 4 months.

Jaymz Marez Session

As stated in an earlier post, for this session we shot in the salon as we had 4 hair stylist and models and wanted to give the artists access to all their tools.

Also I did not want to shuttle the subjects back and forth from location to salon. I used a simple three light setup of Profoto Acutes on the Manfrotto backdrop and one Acute in a beauty dish as the main light.

There are a lot of hair stylists out there but few hair artists. People who can mold, sculpt and create art specific to the subjects face that defies logic while giving you an insight into who they are. Jaymz is such an artist. As we get ready for our 2013 NAHA entry, we wanted to get together and create some portfolio pieces prior.

After texting back and forth the night before we decided to get together and shoot despite the weather. Weather? Well I am a location shooter and the overnight frost warning did not bode well for outside photography. So Beth, hair stylist Alejandro Romero and MUA Christian Alvarez caravaned over and got to work.

Agency model Eileen Marie is one of my favorite models to shoot. Her posing (below is a 90 second segment) and on set energy are unlike anything you have ever seen. I expect her to call me any day and say she is off to Europe or NYC, so until then I am gonna make as many images as possible

Kie Kie Session

My hair stylist wanted to do a quick shoot with her daughter this morning. I didn’t want to overwhelm Kie Kie with studio light and such, so I used natural light. I think it was a great first effort from a young woman who is more comfortable behind her video camera

I get request from re-touchers… CONSTANTLY. But I just can’t imagine having someone else create my final image. I shoot with the end image in my head when I click the shutter. Here is a quick video of edit from Kie Kie’s photo in Photoshop CS5.

GRIDIRON: Composite Photograph

Inspired by the work of Joel Grimes and my friend Patricia’s iconic photo this is my interpretation of the female shoulder pad football image. My work has been described as sensual and intimate, this image I believe has both.

The original photo of Alyssa was shot on Adorama Seamless Background Paper suspended from a Manfrotto Background Support.

I used a three edge setup of Profoto Acute2R…

I then masked her photo and brought it into photoshop. Next I looked for a football field to shoot. This became a bigger task than I imagined. Either school was going on and the field was in use or the field was locked down like a prison with no access. Eventually I came upon one right in my backyard that was perfect. I shot five exposures (+2 +1 0 -1 -2)…

Then used Photomatix Pro 4 to create an HDR.

Image is nice but without the lights on its lacking interest. Well I could call the groundskeeper and get special permission to light the field or I can do it in Adobe Photoshop CS6. I chose the latter…

And I needed to light the field by creating light beams…

I then placed Alyssa on the top layer…

Did a little cleanup followed by a bit of curve, sharpening, contrast and color adjustments to create the final image…
