Petite Models

The majority of models I work with are 5′10″ or taller and size 0 to 4.  The reason being is that they photograph tall filling the frame and fit the sample sizes of the designers I work for with little to no adjustments.  The majority are hard working, fairly humble and want to produce beautiful imagery.  However on average the petite models work HARDER.

My sub 5′4″ clients know they will not be high fashion runway models.  But they also know that if photographed correctly the scales can tip in their favor and they can produce incredible print work.  Today’s shoot with Jennifer Valeros was for an upcoming magazine spread.  Jennifer’s MUA flaked on her so she did her own hair and make up, then met me at dawn, braved the cold and worked tirelessly for 2 hours crouching, standing on piles of bricks and suspended from fences in the name of art.

When I shoot smaller models I avoid placing them next to large objects that will make them seem smaller.  Instead I use wide angle lens to magnify them against backgrounds.  I shoot from slightly below to lengthen the subject and choose poses that will not add width.  Lastly I use lighting that frames the model and creates the maximum angles and contrast for visual interest.

Here are some of my petite superstars below…

    Hi David

I really like your style, approach and creative flow you give to your images. The models present themselves very well with some very nice but not over exaggerated poses, giving the image a sense of reality. It truly sets them apart from other fashion images.

I hope to one day shoot on your standards.

    Best.

Thank you for the kind words Gus. I really try to create images that look as organic and fluid as possible. During a shoot I will find a pose I really like then I tell the model to remember it. When she says she has it, I tell her to come out of the pose totally. Then I compose and focus and then tell the model to find the pose again. As she moves into it again it creates IMO a more natural version with movement.
